Quick answer

A Vancouver–Calgary one-way RV trip covers about 970 km through the Rockies and needs 7–10 days to do well. The one-way drop-off fee is the single biggest variable — and which direction you book changes both the fee and campground availability. Here's how we route it for our clients.

The decision nobody explains

Should I start in Vancouver or Calgary?

There is no single right answer — the cheaper direction shifts by season, and booking the wrong one can cost you hundreds more for an identical trip.

Here's the mechanism most travelers are never told: one-way fees and fleet availability are driven by which direction the rental company needs its vehicles repositioned. When more renters want to drive west-to-east, the company has a surplus of vehicles sitting in the east and discounts the eastbound direction to move them back. That balance flips through the season, so the "cheaper" start city in June may be the pricier one in September.

This is exactly why a generic blog can't answer it and a live agency can. We don't guess the direction — we price both before we book.

[OPERATOR TO WRITE — real experience] How we decide the start city for a client: arrival logistics matter as much as the fee. For guests flying long-haul from China, we weigh a YVR (Vancouver) arrival — ease into the trip along the coast, depot pickup smoother — against a YYC (Calgary) arrival that puts the Rockies on day one. Replace with your real reasoning; keep only what's true.

We check both directions live for every client before we book.

The biggest variable

What does the one-way drop-off fee actually cost?

Most one-way routes carry an $1,100 fee, and Calgary or Edmonton to Vancouver is $1,550 — these are CanaDream's posted 2026 figures, not vague estimates.

Source: CanaDream's posted 2026 one-way fees. Aggregator sites often quote a vague ~$500 industry figure — that's not what you'll pay on a CanaDream booking, which is why we quote the exact fee up front.

Pacing & routing

How many days do I need, and what's the route?

Plan 7–10 days for Vancouver–Calgary to avoid a rushed drive — the scenery between Revelstoke and Jasper is the whole reason to come, and it doesn't reward speed.

SegmentNotes
Vancouver → Kamloops / RevelstokeOvernight, ~4–5 hr. Eases you out of the city before the mountains begin.
Revelstoke → Lake Louise / BanffEnters the Rockies — the landscape changes by the hour.
Icefields Parkway → JasperThe scenic core. See our campground guide for RV length limits at each stop.
Banff / Jasper → Calgary~1.5 hr Banff–Calgary — an easy final leg to the drop-off.

Every campground's RV length limit and 2026 closure status is in our Banff & Jasper RV Campground Guide — check it before you lock the route, because the Jasper end has reduced inventory this year.

The honest math

Is one-way worth it versus a round trip?

One-way is worth it when you value the 7–9 hours of backtracking it saves more than the $1,100+ drop fee it adds — otherwise a Calgary round-trip is the smarter buy.

The trade is simple to see once it's laid out. A one-way trip lets every kilometre be new scenery and ends you near a different airport — but it adds the drop-off fee. A round-trip from Calgary avoids the one-way fee entirely, at the cost of re-driving roughly 7–9 hours you've already seen. For the full cost picture, see our True Total Cost of Renting an RV in Canada.

Choose one-way if
  • You're flying into one city, out of another
  • You'd rather see new scenery every day
  • The drop fee is worth saving 7–9 hours of repeat driving
Choose round-trip if
  • You can fly in and out of Calgary
  • You want to avoid the $1,100+ fee entirely
  • You're happy to re-drive the Banff–Revelstoke stretch

2026 reality

Which direction has tighter campground availability?

The Jasper end of the route is the tight one in 2026 — book it early regardless of which direction you drive.

This isn't about direction so much as a fact of this year: Jasper's campground inventory is reduced after the 2024 wildfire. Wabasso is closed and Wapiti is operating at reduced capacity, which means the Jasper-area nights on a Vancouver–Calgary route fill earlier than the Banff end. Whether you start in Vancouver or Calgary, the Jasper leg is the one to lock first.

Our strongest first-hand insight

What do Chinese-speaking travelers most often get wrong on one-way trips?

Three mistakes come up again and again — and each one is avoidable with a single conversation before booking.

01

[OPERATOR TO WRITE] Mistake 1

e.g. Assuming same-day pickup right after a long-haul flight from China — the realistic timeline, and why we build in a buffer night. Rewrite from real experience.

02

[OPERATOR TO WRITE] Mistake 2

e.g. Underestimating the one-way drop fee when comparing against a domestic rental at home. Your real wording.

03

[OPERATOR TO WRITE] Mistake 3

e.g. Booking the pricier direction because an aggregator showed it first. How we catch it. Keep only what's true.

We correct these in the first call — in English or 中文 — before a single dollar is committed.
