First-Time RV Pickup in Calgary: Everything Before You Drive Off
Short answer: bring your valid driver’s licence, booking confirmation and the credit card you booked with, and allow about an hour for your first pickup. You’ll do quick paperwork, get a hands-on orientation of the driving and house systems, photograph the RV, then provision and go — Banff is about 90 minutes west. No special licence is needed for any RV in our fleet.
Renting an RV for the first time feels like a lot — until you’ve done the pickup. We walk first-timers through it every week from our Calgary base, and the truth is it’s straightforward when you know what’s coming. Here’s exactly what happens, what to bring, and the mistakes worth avoiding.
What to bring to your RV pickup
- Valid driver’s licence for each driver (an International Driving Permit may be needed for some non-English/French licences).
- Your booking confirmation and the credit card used to book, for the agreement and deposit.
- A rough route or campground plan — so we can tailor the orientation and tips to where you’re actually going.
- Comfortable time — budget about an hour; it’s worth not rushing your first one.
What happens during the pickup, step by step
Here’s the flow from arrival to driving off:
- 1. Paperwork & coverage. We review the rental agreement, confirm your coverage options and included kilometres (100 km/night is included), and answer any questions before you sign.
- 2. The orientation walkthrough. The most valuable part. A team member shows you how to drive it, and how the house systems work — fresh and waste water, the electrical/battery and propane, the fridge, stove, heater, and toilet — plus how to set up and pack down at a campsite.
- 3. Inspection & photos. We walk around the RV together, note any existing marks, and you photograph it so your return is quick and worry-free.
- 4. Provision & depart. Stock groceries and water, set your phone mount and route, and you’re off. We’re on call 24/7 if anything comes up on the road.
Don’t rush the orientation. Ten extra minutes learning the water and propane system at the lot saves an hour of guesswork at your first campsite.
Common first-timer mistakes (and how to avoid them)
- Booking too big a rig. A larger motorhome is harder to park and limits which campgrounds you can use. Match size to your group — see our RV vs campervan guide.
- Not reserving campgrounds early. Banff sites sell out months ahead for summer. Lock the campground when you book the RV.
- Forgetting the height. Know your RV’s clearance and watch for low gas-station canopies and drive-throughs — a classic first-timer moment.
- Underestimating setup time. Arrive at your first campsite with daylight to spare while you learn levelling and hookups.
- Skipping the dump-station basics. Ask us to demo grey/black water at pickup — or add our Drop & Go return so we handle it.
Do you need a special licence to drive an RV in Alberta?
No. A standard driver’s licence covers our entire fleet, from camper vans to the largest motorhomes. Alberta’s mountain highways are paved and RV-friendly, and the orientation gets you confident before you leave the lot. If your licence isn’t in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it.
